Let me propose a new warranty model for you Users out there to consider, and challenge you manufacturers out there to think about it.
It only considers batteries for telco use, perhaps only long life, but I can’t see why UPS could not be considered.
If we all agree that by applying the 80% end of life capacity rule, the capacity performance of a battery system should look something like this.
This is what the industry runs on now. Although there is some confusion as to whether this is a system characteristic or an individual cell or monoblock profile.
We define an end-of-life level that normal flags replacement. As a User I want a Yes-No curve. If at any time during the battery life I am above it, this is good. If I am below it, it is bad, and it is the manufacturers problem, not mine.
This is not design life. It is service-life. It is agreed. It could be 5 years, 8 years, 15 years, 18 months.
At the end period, replacement with the same battery (or manufacturer) would be the normal course of events.
I’ll let the idea sink in, but in Telstra, it is now how they want to work!
